The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) imposes stricter levels of minimum efficiency for motors used in the USA and Canada.

North America represents one of the more interesting markets for European equipment manufacturers as it is an area that recognizes technical innovation.
Exports to the USA have always represented an interesting opportunity. Some overseas countries have their own specific and typically "intolerant" rules and regulations to comply with, but as a matter of fact, North American standards are very realistic and mandatory. Energy plays an essential role, because of the growth in electricity costs and increased environmental awareness the USA regulatory Agencies now enforce some of the toughest standards for electric motors in the world.

On 19 December 2010, the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) will come into force. This will impose new efficiency limits for a wide range of three-phase motors and brake motors with power ratings from 1 to 500 HP.

After this date, equipment containing non-compliant motors will be rejected at the USA port of entry. EISA is not actually new. It was signed into law on 19 December 2007 and in some ways values are similar to those, which will come into force much later in Europe around 2015 - 2017.

Within EISA, Section 313: "Electric Motor Efficiency Standards" replaces the current 1992 Energy Policy Act (EPAct) legislation. It sets out new and stricter minimum efficiency levels for motors, taking them from Nema "Energy Efficient" to Nema "Premium Efficient" and equivalent to the IE3 level of efficiency.

Lafert, leader in the manufacture of energy saving motors, has been featured on the North American market since the late 80s and is now a market leader for metric motors with a 20% market share.
Lafert has been producing EPAct motors since 1997 and is ready to comply with the forthcoming EISA standards with a range of Nema Premium efficiency and IE3 products.
