An integrated servo motor and drive package designed for AGV applications: ECO LINE and PRO LINE

The Servo Motor and Drive Packages for AGV are part of the Smartris packaged-drive system solution, developed to simplify AGV design while ensuring reliable and precise motion control.
The solution integrates gear, servo motor, drive, and wheel into a compact, ready-to-install package, reducing engineering effort and shortening time to commissioning.

Developed through the combined expertise of Lafert in electric motors and drives and Sumitomo Drive Technologies in gear and gearbox design, ECO LINE solutions are optimized for AGVs operating with light payloads and high travel speeds, where efficiency, compactness, and ease of integration are critical. While PRO LINE solution is developed for applications where higher vehicle mass, increased radial loads, and mechanical robustness are critical.

Complete Package Solution for AGV

The solution is a fully integrated drive package consisting of:

  • Gear unit
  • Brushless servo motor
  • Drive unit
  • Wheel

This high level of integration reduces wiring complexity, minimizes installation space, and enables consistent performance across all components from a single supplier.

The gear output shaft rotation design makes ECO LINE a cost-efficient and compact solution, particularly suited for AGVs requiring fast response and smooth motion at higher speeds.

The PRO LINE is based on a ring gear housing rotation design, allowing the drive to handle higher loads and maintaining stable and controlled motion behavior.

The integrated package combines gear, servo motor, drive, and wheel into a coordinated system, simplifying AGV architecture and reducing the number of interfaces. This approach supports consistent performance and predictable vehicle behavior in demanding intralogistics and production environments.

Designed for AGVs with higher payloads, the PRO LINE enables reliable operation under continuous duty conditions. The compact mechanical design helps maintain efficient space usage inside the vehicle while ensuring the structural strength required for heavy-duty applications.

The drive and control concept is optimized for AGV motion profiles, including frequent starts, stops, and direction changes. This makes PRO LINE suitable for mobile platforms that require dependable traction control and long-term operational stability.

TECHNICAL FAQS

What should be considered when selecting SMARTRIS LINE for an AGV project?

Key factors include total vehicle weight, radial load requirements, duty cycle, and the operating environment. Proper system configuration ensures optimal traction performance, mechanical reliability, and long service life.

What type of AGV applications is the ECO LINE package designed for? And what about the PRO LINE?

ECO LINE packages are designed for light-payload AGVs up to a total vehicle weight of approximately 1500 kg, typically used in intralogistics, material transport, and assembly line operations where smooth motion and cost-efficient integration are required.

PRO LINE is intended for AGVs handling heavier loads, such as shuttle systems, pallet-handling AGVs, forklift-based AGVs, and other mobile platforms operating in intralogistics and production environments.

What components are included in the SMARTRIS AGV package?

The solution integrates a gear unit, brushless servo motor, drive, and wheel into a single coordinated system, ensuring matched performance and simplified system design.

How does SMARTRIS support continuous operation?

The mechanical design and integrated drive concept are optimized for continuous duty cycles. This supports reliable operation during frequent acceleration, deceleration, and long operating hours without compromising motion stability.

What motion control functions are supported?

The integrated drive supports torque and speed control optimized for AGV traction applications. Position control functionality is under development and not the primary control mode for ECO LINE configurations.

PRO LINE is optimized for torque control and speed control, which are essential for AGV traction applications. These control modes ensure predictable vehicle behavior during start-up, cruising, and stopping.

How does the ECO LINE gear design differ from PRO LINE gear design solutions?

ECO LINE uses a gear output shaft rotation design with ball bearings, providing a cost-effective and compact solution optimized for high-speed, light-load AGV applications rather than high radial load conditions.

The ring gear housing rotation design of PRO LINE improves load distribution and mechanical stability at the wheel interface. This helps reduce mechanical stress and supports smooth motion behavior, even when operating with higher payloads.

Why is PRO LINE suitable for high-load AGV applications?

PRO LINE is designed with a ring gear housing rotation concept that enables higher radial load capacity. This allows the drive to support heavier AGVs while maintaining stable motion and reliable traction under demanding operating conditions.

What communication interfaces are available?

The drive units support CANopen (DS402) and Modbus RTU, enabling straightforward integration with common AGV controllers and vehicle management systems.

What safety functions are available?

The drive includes STO (Safe Torque Off) functionality, compliant with applicable SIL and Performance Level requirements, supporting safe AGV operation without additional external safety hardware.
