For healthy growth and profitable breeding, animal health is of crucial importance. Animals need huge amounts of oxygen to support their metabolism. A suitable ventilation system provides the necessary air exchange and temperature control, helping to create the healthy conditions of the indoor environment.

The fans therefore require robust motors with a compact footprint, in continuous duty, with high energy efficiency, completely waterproof and with anti-corrosion treatment. To ensure proper operation, in fact, ventilation systems must be washed frequently and resist corrosive agents.

Investing in barn air quality is now the effective way to achieve an increase in performance and economic efficiency in livestock farms.

The development

Ultra compact IE5 motors for more sustainable farming.

Livestock farming is one of the most polluting production activities on the planet: it causes contamination of water, air, and CO2 emissions. Industrial fans installed in stables are as indispensable for animal health as they are energy dispersive.
In operation 24 hours a day, they determine the flow of air in and out of closed environments, controlling the air destratification.

One of the European Community's sustainability goals is to reduce polluting emissions from livestock farming by 40% by 2030.

Our goal for this project is the development of a Super Premium Efficiency IE5 solution that allows energy savings and emission reductions, ensuring speed control to regulate air flow and the restriction of internal dispersions

Energy efficiency has been one of the sectors in which Lafert is most present for decades, we were among the very first to develop synchronous motors with permanent magnets that allow to eliminate much of the energy dispersion of the rotor, increasing performance and final power.

Our synchronous motors achieve a very high torque density thanks to the physical properties of permanent magnets. The compactness of HPS motors is an excellent starting point for reducing the size of motors that allow to meet the requirements of the application.

 

Being an axial fan, the motor is installed directly in the air flow. We have therefore studied a system for the power supply of the motor that provides for the exit of the cables on the back, minimizing dimension and therefore the disturbance of the air flow.

The installation on the fan is done by mounting "pad-mount" with four feet at 90 °.
In this way the dimension of the motor in the air flow is limited to the case only.

The case created by extrusion process, has a completely smooth and non-finned surface to ensure further aerodynamics to the solution. In addition, the smooth case has the additional advantage of facilitating washing, which is a frequent practice in this type of application. For this reason, the motor has a high degree of protection from ingress of dust and water, to prevent dirt, solvents, and industrial detergents from damaging functional parts of the motor.

Lafert's solution

The solution identified is extremely innovative: our permanent magnet HPS motor guarantees an IE5 energy level, Super Premium Efficiency that ensures energy savings throughout the life cycle of the product.

Each project involves the installation of many fans that work in continuous motion throughout the day. By studying solutions with very high efficiency, a considerable margin of energy saving is achieved: thanks to this product we contribute to making one of the most polluting production sectors for the environment less polluting, also allowing the breeder a strong economic saving compared to commonly used motors.

IE5 energy efficiency

The solution identified is an HPS motor, Super Premium Efficiency IE5.
Thanks to permanent magnets, the loss of energy by the rotor is significantly reduced.
The special customization also provides for the optimization of all those components that contribute to additional losses.

Special compactness

The HPS motor is smaller than an asynchronous solution with same torque/power, but in this project particular importance is given to the compactness of the radial dimensions of the motor to minimize the impact of the latter in the air flow of the axial fan.

Extruded case and PAD mounting

With the aim of not altering the air flow in the system, an extruded and non-finned case was designed, with electrical connection located on the back and "Pad-Mount" mounting.
The sealed case also allows the deep cleansing of the motor without liquid infiltration and consequent damage to functional elements.

The energy savings calculated by DACS in this project is 25%, ensuring a faster payback on the investment and contributing

The future
